This book is utterly fascinating! Short bios about 16 extraordinary Australian writers going back to the 19th century – many of whom I’ve never heard of.
There’s one woman who was a successful crime fiction writer – though of questionable talent – who conspired with her husband to blackmail her way to publication.
Then there’s another who wrote 1 million words a year, publishing thousands of short stories and novels. Her murder around 1970 almost single-handedly crashed the Australian publishing industry in 1971 because of the massive void she left. Unbeknownst to them, the lists of several major publishers were made up almost entirely of her writing, albeit under multiple pseudonyms.
I highly recommend this one! I picked it up from a display shelf at my local library – thank you wonderful librarians.
